York Bridge Concepts, Inc. Builds Timber Bridges That are “Green” and Cost-effective

Global Energy Solution’s One-of-a-Kind Timber Bridge

Guayama, Puerto Rico (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION VIDEO

Completed in late April, ahead of the 30-day construction deadline, York Bridge Concepts, Inc. (YBC) has designed and built a 5-ton GVW capacity timber vehicular bridge for Global Energy Services, Inc. (GES) in Guayama, Puerto Rico. Founded in Spain in 1982, GES is a global, independent service provider for wind and solar projects. As the leading operator in the renewable energies sector and the leading company in the installation and maintenance of wind farms, GES has almost 30 years of experience and has operations in America, Europe and North Africa. GES has provided more than ten percent of the cumulative wind power capacity in the world.

As stated by Global Energy Services’ Professional Engineer, Juan Rodriguez, “GES chose YBC to build our bridge because they have a successful track record and have the ability to deliver a solid, well-finished product.” Along with this, YBC was very capable of meeting the “green” requirements that GES desired: “Our renewable project and company encourages the use of green-friendly solutions that can be implemented in conjunction with nature. GES was looking to have a solid structure that reduces contamination and pollution to the environment. GES tries to minimize the consumption of concrete, steel and other products that release CO2 emissions into the air,” states Rodriguez. — YBC uses primarily Southern Yellow Pine and Douglas Fir for all of their timber structures. Wood is the only renewable and sustainable building material. It makes up 47 percent of all raw materials made in the United States with its share of energy consumption (during production) being only four percent of all manufactured materials.

GES focuses on reducing the overall carbon footprint and York Bridge Concepts contributes with the use of their environmentally-friendly products along with their green construction methods. On this particular project,YBC placed glulaminated beams over a section of an intermittent creek, requiring zero impact. The beams were placed from a flatbed truck, by a crane, directly over the intermittent creek. The full span of the glulaminated beams reach almost 80 feet. GES’ bridge was built with the latest applications: YBC’s sealant and other applications help to protect the bridge from harsh, natural elements which maximizes the longevity of the bridge and minimizes maintenance, eventually reducing the need for additional bridge construction or premature repairs. Along with their green construction methods and environmentally-friendly products, YBC provides all of their clients with a detail maintenance plan. With proper maintenance, a York timber vehicular bridge will last for generations.

Because York built the single-lane, 17-foot wide by 79-foot long bridge on site, mobilization of equipment and materials overseas and through inspections lent to a tough start to the project, yet the bridge was built with virtually no construction challenges. The bridge can be found providing a “great access connection between two distant points” on their site. The bridge creates an access that is extremely necessary because otherwise, “there would be increased operational costs,” states Rodriguez. The costs would accumulate on a daily bases.

Grenite® is a sustainable alternative to materials such as laminates, solid surfaces, quartz and granite.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Saint-Gobain has achieved GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality and GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification for its Grenite® series of engineered stone surfaces. In order to become GREENGUARD Certified, the entire Grenite line met stringent certification requirements for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

“These certifications reinforce our commitment to producing quality products that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also help set an industry standard of sustainability and ongoing health and safety,” said Diana Ohl, product manager engineered stone at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics. “By meeting the strict standards provided by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, specifying Grenite for commercial and institutional applications such as offices, educational and healthcare facilities becomes an even easier choice.”

Founded in 2001, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute is the world’s leading third-party guide to low-emitting home and office products and building materials. The GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification ProgramSM recognizes products that meet strict chemical emissions limits, which helps create healthier indoor environments. Offering even stricter qualification criteria, GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification validates low-emitting products used in environments where children and other sensitive populations spend an extensive amount of time.

With one of the highest abrasion resistance of all countertop materials, Grenite is ideal for high-traffic horizontal and vertical applications in the retail, hospitality, banking, education, healthcare, entertainment and restaurant industries. Manufactured entirely in the United States, Grenite is also flame-retardant, NSF 51 certified, non-porous, durable and easy to install.

Grenite is a sustainable alternative to materials such as laminates, solid surfaces, quartz and granite. It features the highest post-consumer recycled content currently available in the market — up to 85 percent — and is eligible for LEED® points through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

The Grenite series will be on display at the 2012 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition, May 17-19, at Booth #3339.

For decades they have been touted by green warriors and global warming believers as the lynch pin of their brave new utopian future. Now it seems that something is truly rotten in the state of Denmark, or the great state of Texas in this case. After years of searching, it appears that scientists have finally identified an actual cause of climate change… wind farms. Critics have previously cited industrial wind turbine farms as a massive blot on the landscape, as well as accusing them of causing environmental and economic damage. Reports of bird and bat mortality, local deforestation, as well as negative effects on peat bogs in the UK — have all been cited in relation to the operation of wind turbines. Economic concerns include homes located near wind turbines losing significant value with some homes being impossible to sell and abandoned by their owners. Above all of this, the fact still remains that wind farms, like solar farms, cannot produce any significant amount of power required to feed the minimum base-load to electrify a small city. Supporters and green lobbyists for the wind industry claim that these damages are justified in order to move society off of fossil fuels. Despite their sketchy green credentials, industrial wind farms have still been awarded generous subsidies from governments in North America and Europe. But all these drawbacks pale in comparison to the latest bombshell to hit this once-celebrated symbol of Al Gore and the IPCC’s new green …

www.solardave.com SolarDave: Please tell me about your solar panel system and how you saved some money? Adam Stevenson: The total of the system and materials was K. I ended up spending about another 00 in permit fees and a structural engineer and 0 for an electrician, several hundred dollars for a guy to come help me out for the two afternoons he spent with me. Xcel (Energy) gave me 538 rebate. Fix cost based on the number of kilowatts you are installing and has nothing to do with how much you pay the permit office or the electrician. My final cost after rebate was 37. (SolarDave note: that is cheap!) I started my research in solar probably about a year before I actually installed it went and got a couple of bids from some of the local solar people both from contractors that my friends have used as well as just searching the internet and while talking to one of the guys I find of developed a good feeling from him, and I asked the question “Would it be possible to do some of the work myself” and kind of learn along the way he said “Sure I absolutely support the do-it-yourself-er (DIY) so I said why don’t you throw me bids, what it would cost just come home and have solar one day and what it would cost to have it done where I do some or all the work myself. And throw them both to me and I said let’s try the second one. The guys name is Steve Cross from Sun Spot Solar. I gave him my electric bills and said this is how much I think I need to generate and he …

Farmington, PA (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

The Nemacolin Energy Institute hosted the 1st Annual National Coal Conference on April 24 – 25, 2012. The conference brought together industry leaders to discuss current challenges and the role coal will play in helping America move toward energy independence.

Nemacolin Energy Institute reports, our nation’s development through the 20th century was fueled, in a large part, by fossil energy. Looking forward, coal will continue to be the source of more than half the electrical production required to support our nation’s economic growth in the 21st century. But, increasing regulation is making it difficult for the industry to meet our national needs.

Robert Murray, founder, Chairman, President and CEO of Murray Energy Corporation kicked off the conference with a candid review of the importance coal has played and must continue to play as a base load energy source for the generation of affordable electricity.

Mr. Murray explained, that today the coal industry in crisis. “The average cost of coal-fired electricity in America has been $ 0.04 per kilowatt hour. This compares to $ 0.22 per kilowatt hour for wind and solar electricity.” But, he claimed, the times are changing because of increased regulation and costs, “Families living on an income of less than $ 50,000 have historically paid 12% of their after-tax income for energy. Already, in 2012, it is projected to be 21%.” This makes the on-going availability of low cost, coal-fired electricity even more important to our nation’s economic recovery.

From a global context, Mr. Murray also cautioned, “China is bringing a new 500 megawatt, coal-fired power plant on-line every week. This means they will have a capability for low cost energy that could attract even more off-shoring of U.S. jobs.”

Congressman Tim Murphy(R – PA), delivered a message that America needs to address an immediate need to upgrade its transportation infrastructure and establish reasonable regulations to ensure the uninterrupted movement of coal to customers. He complimented the industry on their courage and dedication to helping Americans have continued access to affordable electricity.

Steve Miller, President and CEO of the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity spoke and called for an “all in” national energy policy coupled with a reasonable regulatory package that would encourage fair competition between all energy sources. The title of his talk was “Clean Coal, Now is The Time”, and he emphasized the critical importance of low-cost, coal–fired energy to power our nation’s resurgence in manufacturing.

Mike Carey, Bill Bisset, George Ellis, and Bill Raney Presidents of the Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia Coal Associations respectively, each delivered a sobering message that the coal industry (and specifically Appalachian coal) is being challenged with increased regulations that will result in an increase in coal-fired energy costs. They called for the development of a balanced national policy to help our nation become more energy independent.

Hal Quinn, President and CEO of the National Mining Association highlighted that the demand for electricity will be increasing as our national economy recovers and manufacturing returns to America. The key question he raised for critics aggressively looking to reduce coal utilization is – “How do you replace the electricity and jobs associated with coal?”

Steve Winberg, VP of R&D, and Coal Conversion & Power at CONSOL Energy Inc. closed the conference by challenging industry leaders to focus on helping address the global problem of geographic availability of energy. He pointed out that too many people do not have affordable access to energy. He shared data indicating there are 1.3B people in the world who live without electricity. The industry can play a key role in improving the lives of these people by continuing to invest in research to make coal an even more environmentally friendly energy source.

Dennis Noonan, Chairman of the Board of the Nemacolin Energy Institute, explained the NEI is committed to helping public and private sector leaders understand the facts about all energy sources in moving America toward energy independence.

The Nemacolin Energy Institute was filed as a 501 c(3) Organization in 2011. The vision of the NEI is to catalyze public and private sector leadership collaboration in the development and commercialization of America’s energy resources and help provide timely factual knowledge necessary to tackle difficult challenges.
